What to Expect During the Corrective Phase
Voice Recording Note: This is Dawn's explanation, but her AI Voice. AI cannot pronounce some words like tretinoin correctly. However, the messaging is still powerful.
The corrective phase is a time of transformation—and yes, it can be challenging. This is where the real change happens, and while it may feel unfamiliar, it’s all part of the healing journey.
✨ This Is Where the Magic Happens
During this phase, you may experience reactions that are new, temporary, and completely normal. These reactions signal that your skin is undergoing the necessary process of repair. Without reaction, there is no repair—and without repair, there is no lasting change.
As long as you are following your protocol exactly as prescribed, this phase is safe and expected.
✅ Protocol Compliance Is Key
To ensure safe and effective results:
-
Follow your protocol 100%—no exceptions
-
Do not skip steps, reduce product use, or alter the order
-
Do not introduce any new products unless directed by our team
-
Keep up with all products listed—both required and optional, if you’ve chosen to include them
Missing even a few nights can significantly set back your progress. In fact, skipping your protocol for just three nights is like receiving a failing grade (3/7) and will prevent your skin from properly acclimating.
🔁 Expected (and Normal) Reactions
If you’re following your protocol correctly, you may experience:
-
Temporary darkening of pigment
-
Itching or burning
-
Peeling or flaking
-
Redness or dryness
-
Increased oiliness
-
Purging (breakouts as congestion clears)
-
Splotchiness or uneven tone
-
Flushing or warmth
-
Mild stinging upon application
These reactions are a sign of repair and renewal, and they will ease over time with consistency.
🧴 Supportive Products for Relief
To ease discomfort from expected reactions, the following products may be used as often as needed:
-
Restorative Serum
-
Rebalance
-
HydroDrops
-
HA + Restorative Masque
-
Hyacyn Mist
-
Moisture Restore
These are safe and soothing options to support your skin during the adjustment period.
⚠️ Unanticipated Reactions—When to Pause
If you experience any of the following, stop your protocol immediately:
-
Bleeding
-
Blisters
-
Extreme redness
-
Rash
Follow this emergency care regimen (AM & PM):
-
Double cleanse with Obagi Gentle Cleanser or Prelude
-
Hyacyn Mist
-
Rebalance
-
Restorative Serum
-
SPF (AM only)
Use the HA + Restorative Masque 1–2x daily for added support.
Then, upload clear photos in your MyTouch portal and complete the Emergency Form for review.
🧘♀️ Trust the Process
Reactions may come and go as your skin evolves. Many patients see improvement within the first few weeks, while others may experience reactions for longer. Either way—healing is happening. Your results will come with patience, consistency, and trust.
You’ve got this, and we’re here every step of the way.
Below are some NORMAL REACTIONS. If you experience these types of reactions, continue with your protocol. Do NOT stop. Consistency is key!

How to Use Correctives Properly
Your corrective products are typically found toward the end of your protocol, and some may be used both morning and night. These products are formulated to work exactly as written—they are not interchangeable, and dosages should not be adjusted. Please read the following guidelines carefully to ensure optimal results and avoid unintended reactions.
Corrective products include any form of retinoids (retinol or tretinoin) and any products with Hydroquinone (HQ).
Why You Must Follow Instructions Exactly
Each protocol is carefully designed with specific products meant to work together. Using only some products, changing dosages, or substituting with alternatives disrupts the entire formula, much like altering ingredients in a recipe. You wouldn’t swap bacon and sausage for eggs in a dish and expect the same flavor. The same applies here.
Dosage Matters
-
Corrective products will always include an exact dosage (e.g., 1 full pump, a fingertip amount).
-
Skin-strengthening or anti-aging products may offer flexible dosing (e.g., 2–4 pumps).
-
Do not deviate from the listed dosage on correctives.
-
No—it is not too much for your face. These dosages are specifically calibrated for your face and under the chin only.
🛑 Do NOT apply corrective products to other areas of the body, including the neck or chest.
✅ You may use skin-strengthening products on other areas, but increase the dosage accordingly. Corrective products are not designed for other areas and sharing them will reduce effectiveness on your face and may trigger unexpected reactions.
How to Apply Correctives
Corrective products (especially Tretinoin and HQ) may feel heavy and take time to absorb.
Follow this method:
-
Use the dot method: Apply small dots across your face using a fingertip.
-
Massage each section for ~20 seconds. If it doesn’t absorb easily, let it sit for a minute, then gently pat into the skin.
-
Repeat until the full dosage is applied.
-
Focus on pigmented areas first.
-
Avoid the eyes, corners of the lips, and keep:
-
1 finger-width away from the eyes
-
2 finger-widths away from tattooed eyebrows (correctives may fade brow pigment)
-
6. Apply the nasolabial folds, nose crevices, and jawline last with minimal product—these are sensitive zones. You may want to apply additional barrier support products on these areas first, such as Restorative or Rebalance.
7.Feather product lightly under the chin. Do not apply to the neck.
Important Reminders
-
Wash your hands thoroughly after applying correctives. These products transfer easily to hands, surfaces, children, pets, and can stain or irritate unintended areas.
-
Apply at least 30 minutes before bed and avoid looking down (e.g., at your phone) during that time to prevent product transfer to the neck.
-
Be cautious of babies or pets touching your face shortly after application.
-
When applying SPF or makeup last in the morning, we advise waiting a few minutes. Be cautious of how you apply not to spread onto the neck or by the eyes. Your application on these areas should ensure that you are moving correctives onto those areas. We suggest applying SPF and makeup near eyes and mouth first with clean hands or to use more of a patting to applying SPF and makeup rather than massaging.
Neck and Décolleté Use (Optional)
Do not use prescription (Rx) correctives on your neck or chest. If you'd like to treat those areas:
-
Evening: Mix a small amount of Retinol 1% with Hydrinity’s Encore
-
Morning: Mix Exfoderm Forte with Encore
Start slowly and build tolerance. As your skin acclimates, you can gradually increase the proportion of retinol or Exfoderm Forte.
Of course, you need to double cleanse, tone, and use barrier support on these areas AM and PM if you apply any products with actives for correction (Retinol, Glycolic, Salicylic, or Lactic)
What to Avoid While on Correctives
🛑 No facial waxing — this can cause scarring and hyperpigmentation. ✔ Instead: Shave, tweeze, or thread only
🛑 No professional skin treatments outside of Spruce Micro while on correctives. This includes:
-
Facials
-
Microneedling
-
Heated treatments (e.g., lasers, steam)
Even seemingly gentle treatments that were well tolerated before can now cause severe reactions. Do not risk it.
🛑 No steam or extreme heat or prolonged sun exposure If you are planning a sunny vacation, then follow the steps outlined in the resource center to adjust correctives for a special event. Please let us know in your e-check in that this adjustment was made. If the adjustment was made for longer than 2 weeks, please text the clinic to reschedule your e-check in (if virtual).
Final Notes
Everything in your protocol has a purpose. Do not modify your products, dosage, or application methods. Reactions may occur—but they are expected and manageable if you follow your plan correctly. Straying from it can lead to setbacks, skin damage, or wasted progress.
If you have questions or need clarification, please reach out during your next check-in—we’re here to support you.
Fingertip Dosage

PRODUCT TRANSFER TO THE NECK AS A RESULT OF LOOKING DOWN TOO SOON AFTER APPLICATION. WAIT 30 MINUTES TO LOOK DOWN AT YOUR PHONE OR LAY DOWN.

WAXING WHILE ON CORRECTIVES. YOU WILL BURN YOUR SKIN AND PROBABLY CAUSE SCARRING AND PIH (POST INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION)

A RESULT OF NOT WASHING HANDS AFTER APPLYING CORRECTIVES. PATIENT BLENDED PRODUCTS AS INSTRUCTED ON TOP OF HER HANDS, BUT FAILED TO WASH HANDS AFTERWARDS. CHEMICALS AT HER SALON GOT ON HER HANDS AND CAUSED A NEGATIVE REACTION.

CORRECTIVES USED TOO FAR DOWN ON THE NECK. ONLY USE CORRECTIVES ON THE FACE AND UNDERNEATH THE CHIN. BY SHARING YOUR CORRECTIVE DOSAGE WITH OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY, YOU ARE SKIMPING ON YOUR FACE DOSAGE. YOUR RESULTS WILL BE COMPROMISED AND LESSENED.

What should I do if my correctives spread to close to my eyes or on my neck?
If your correctives have migrated too close to the eye or neck area, unfortunately, this cannot be reversed immediately. The best course of action is to allow the reaction to subside naturally.
To support the healing process, it’s important to use calming products such as Restorative Serum, Rebalance, Hyacyn Mist, or the HA + Restorative Mask. These can help soothe the skin and accelerate recovery. Applying cool compresses may also provide relief from any discomfort.
Do not pick at any areas that may scab, as this can lead to further irritation or scarring.
Please note: you may notice that eye wrinkles and neck lines appear more pronounced than usual, particularly in areas where the product may have transferred. This is a temporary reaction and it will heal with time and proper care.
Can I go in the sun while on correctives?
Living Your Life While on Correctives
Yes, you can absolutely live your life while using correctives. We successfully protocol corrective treatments year-round, including for patients who live in sunny, outdoor-heavy environments. That said, a few lifestyle adjustments are necessary to ensure your results are protected and your skin stays healthy.
☀️ Sun Exposure: Be Smart, Not Limited
You don’t have to stop doing what you love—whether it’s boating, golfing, tennis, or beach days. However, you must commit to being sun-conscious. This means:
-
Avoiding direct sun exposure whenever possible
-
Wearing wide-brimmed hats at all times outdoors
-
Using triple-protection SPF, and reapplying frequently
-
Keeping a Colorescience SPF Brush with you at all times and reapplying every 1–2 hours when exposed to sunlight
Please note: While on correctives, your skin is more sensitive and may burn more easily.
We strongly advise against intentionally tanning or "baking" in the sun, whether on correctives or not. Sun damage = pigment. Always.
👶 Think of Your Skin Like Baby Skin
Corrective products work by increasing cellular turnover, allowing your skin to behave more like it did when you were a baby—functioning at its healthiest and most youthful state.
And just like you would protect a baby’s skin at the beach, your skin on correctives deserves the same care:
-
Stay in the shade
-
Cover up when possible
-
Reapply triple protection SPF consistently
-
Avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours
🔄 Correctives Don't End After the Corrective Phase
Even in maintenance, your protocol will include mild correctives to keep pigment and aging at bay. You may not experience the same level of reaction, but your skin will still need sun protection to preserve results and prevent new pigment.
🍷 Internal Inflammation & Pigment Risk
Be mindful of anything that increases inflammation in the body, as this makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage. This includes:
-
Alcohol
-
Pro-inflammatory foods
-
Dehydration
Support your results with anti-inflammatory foods, proper hydration, and smart sun habits.
🌴 Vacation or Special Sun Exposure Plans?
If you anticipate significant sun exposure, please follow the Vacation or Special Events Protocol listed in the FAQ section.
Let us know at your next e-check-in or in-clinic appointment if you’ve adjusted your routine due to sun exposure so we can make any necessary changes.

🌟 Bottom Line: You Can Be in the Sun—Responsibly
You chose this journey to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin and to prevent recurring pigment. That means sun-smart behavior must become part of your lifestyle.
Live your life. Enjoy the outdoors. But always protect your results by treating your skin with care and respect.
