Why We Care How Many Pumps You Use

Because great skin care shouldn’t be a guessing game.

Walk into a bathroom and you’ll probably find a collection of products accumulated through years of recommendations, impulse purchases, TikTok advice, and the occasional late-night “this will definitely fix my skin” order.

A little of this.

Three pumps of that.

An extra layer when your skin is acting up.

Skip something when it feels dry.

Add something new because your friend swears by it.

And when your skin isn’t improving?

You’re left wondering which product isn’t working—or what you should try next.

That’s exactly why our approach is different.

We don’t believe your skin needs more guessing. It needs a plan.

And when we create that plan, we care about the details.

Yes, even how many pumps you use.

Your Skin Protocol Is a Recipe

Think about baking a cake.

If the recipe calls for two cups of flour, you probably wouldn’t throw in somewhere between one and four cups depending on your mood.

You could.

But you also wouldn’t get to act surprised when your cake comes out looking like a roofing shingle.

The same principle applies when we create a skin protocol.

The products matter.

But so does how much you use, how often you use it, when you use it, and how your skin responds.

That’s why our patients may receive instructions down to the number of pumps, drops, etc.

It isn't because we enjoy being ridiculously specific.

Okay… maybe we enjoy it a little.

It’s because those details give us information we can actually use.

Because We Can't Fine-Tune What We Can't Measure

Imagine we recommend two pumps of a product.

You use three.

Your skin changes.

Now we need to decide what comes next.

There’s just one problem:

We think you’ve been using two.

Suddenly, we're making decisions based on something that didn't actually happen.

The same thing happens when someone skips days, uses half-pumps, doubles up when they think they need more, or quietly adds another product into the mix.

This is one of the biggest differences between buying skin care and having a professionally guided skin protocol.

We're not simply handing you products and wishing you luck.

We're watching what happens next.

We want to know:

  • What are you actually using?

  • How consistently are you using it?

  • How is your skin responding?

  • What has improved?

  • What hasn't?

  • What do your progress photos show?

  • Does something need to change?

Those seemingly boring details help us make better decisions.

More Isn't Automatically Better

We all have a funny tendency to believe that if some is good, more must be better.

If two pumps are good, four pumps must be extra good, right?

No, Betty Crocker. That is not how this works.

The goal isn't to use the most product.

The goal is to use the right amount for your skin.

Sometimes the next step really is more.

Sometimes it's less.

Sometimes it's changing how often something is used.

Sometimes it's leaving everything exactly where it is and giving your skin enough time to show us what the current plan is actually doing.

That's where guidance becomes incredibly valuable.

Instead of reacting to every good day, bad day, breakout, dry patch, or new recommendation you see online, you have someone looking at the bigger picture.

Consistency Gives Us Clues

When someone follows a protocol consistently, something important happens:

We get useful information.

Did it help?

Did it not help?

What changed?

How quickly did it change?

What should we adjust next?

That's how a thoughtful protocol evolves.

But when products, amounts, and frequency are constantly changing, we're essentially trying to solve a puzzle while someone keeps swapping out the pieces.

And that's why we care about the things that might seem almost comically specific.

The full pumps. The drops. The timing. The consistency. The photos.

We care because those details help us understand your skin.

You Don't Need Another Shelf Full of Products

You can buy skin care almost anywhere.

What’s much harder to find is someone who can tell you:

Start here.

Use this much.

Use it this way.

Give it this amount of time.

Show us what happens.

And then let’s decide together what comes next.

That's the kind of guidance we believe makes a skin protocol different from another collection of products sitting on your bathroom counter.

We're not interested in throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

We're interested in being intentional.

Your skin deserves more than trial and error, conflicting internet advice, and another product someone promised would be the one.

It deserves a recipe—and someone who knows how to adjust it.

Because around here, we don't do potluck protocols.

At Spruce, we don't chase dark spots. We change the skin that creates them! Dawn Jett
